Winscombe 2XI 3
A fantastic start to the season for Winscombe 2XI, with a well-deserved win.
After some intense training over the last few weeks, Winscombe started the match with speed, intensity and a wonderful team spirit. The ball was moved quickly across the back with Juju O’sullivan and Trixie Chapman making meaningful transfers. The wing backs of Steph Osmant and Michelle Clarke-McCulloch moved the ball to the forwards Oliva Dilly, Veronica Rendall, Tia Rendall and Becky Matthews. In the first half Winscombe had several chances to get ahead but the Chard keeper saved well. Mathews had a penalty flick saved after O’Sullivan found herself grippling with the ball on the line before being kicked by the defender.
In the second half the midfield of Dulcie Glossop, Chloe Lawson, Amelia Bourton and Lucy Kindred continued with their tireless running and made fabulous movement off the ball to create space for players around them. A great through ball from Glossop found Matthews, who slipped the ball into the D for Dilly to finish ahead of the keeper for Winscombe’s first. Vicky Whittacker made some fabulous saves to keep Winscombe in the lead with shots and deflected shots. The winscombe defence quickly picked the ball up from Whittacker’s pads and swept the ball to safety. The second Winscombe goal came from some super skills from Kindred in the midfield who drew the keeper for V.Rendall to score from the top of the D. Winscombe’s third goal was a well directed cross from V.Rendall across the D to Dilly to slot in. Chard did eventually find the net with 7 minutes to go to make it 3-1, but the defence absorbed the pressure and Winscombe continued to dominate the midfield. The team were delighted with the victory and demonstrated a super work ethic right until the end of the match and everyone played well as a team.
Winscombe Player of the match was Juju O’Sullivan.
